Two New NEXRAD Radars Go Online in Early 2003

Two new NEXRAD weather radars are to be commissioned by the National 
Weather Service this month, one in Mississippi and one in southern 
Indiana. 

#1: KVWX (Evansville, IN) is went online on January 29 at 16:10Z, 
according to the NIDS archive:

"A long-awaited Doppler radar complex is now scouting the skies for severe 
weather in Western Kentucky, Southern Indiana and adjacent areas of 
Illinois. The $8.7 million system came online Friday in southwestern 
Indiana, more than six years after residents and local officials began 
expressing concerns that the region was not covered adequately for severe 
weather."

#2: KDGX (Brandon, MS) will replace the Jackson MS (KJAN) radar around the 
middle of the month.

"THE FINAL STAGES OF THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW BRANDON WSR-88D RADAR 
(KDGX) ARE UNDERWAY. THE BRANDON RADAR WILL NOW BE GOING THROUGH THE 
TESTING PHASES BEFORE FINAL ACCEPTANCE OCCURS. BEGINNING THE WEEK OF 
JANUARY 27, 2003 THROUGH POSSIBLY THE END OF FEBRUARY USERS OF THE JACKSON 
WSR-88D DATA WILL EXPERIENCE PERIODS WHERE NO DATA WILL BE COMING FROM THE 
JACKSON RADAR. WHEN TESTING IS BEING DONE ON THE BRANDON RADAR THE JACKSON 
RADAR MUST BE TAKEN DOWN. NO DATA WILL FLOW FROM THE BRANDON RADAR DURING 
THE TESTING PERIODS."
