UNISYS
NEXRAD Manual, "The Free Text Message is an alphanumeric message generated
at the radar site. It contains information on the operational status of the
radar. A Free Text Message may be issued as a means of providing information to
users in regard to the operational status of the WSR-88D."

WARNING: SOME MESSAGES MAY BE BLANK Due to a bug in the National Weather Service's processing of the FTM
Messages, many come through with Binary characters rendering them unreadable.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this. We first began asking the
NWS to fix this bug in 1998 but they still have not had time to repair it. Help
them understand how much the public needs these messages by taking the time to
tell them to please fix "the binary character problem in the NEXRAD Free Text
Messages". You can write to them at this
link. |
