What is a WSR-88D Status Message? According to the UNISYS NEXRAD Manual, "The Free Text Message is an alphanumeric message generated at the radar site. It contains information on the operational status of the radar. A Free Text Message may be issued as a means of providing information to users in regard to the operational status of the WSR-88D."

NEW! BETA VERSION OF FTM EMAIL PROCESSOR
New From WeatherMatrix

What this means is that you can find out what the trouble is with your local radar and when it will return. Click on the map below to be taken to the latest WSR-88D Status Message for your radar.

WARNING: SOME MESSAGES MAY BE BLANK Due to a bug in the National Weather Service's processing of the FTM Messages, many come through with Binary characters rendering them unreadable. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this. We first began asking the NWS to fix this bug in 1998 but they still have not had time to repair it. Help them understand how much the public needs these messages by taking the time to tell them to please fix "the binary character problem in the NEXRAD Free Text Messages". You can write to them at this link.

NOTES:

The map at right attempts to find the FTM at a local NWS site. If that does not exist, you will be taken the latest copy of the FTM, updated by the WeatherMatrix server every 15 minutes. Sometimes it takes the local office an hour or more to issue an FTM, and some don't issue them at all.

Sometimes multiple radar sites are under the same FTM so you may have to sort through the first few to see your radar's message.

If you are using MSIE, the NWS's latest list of NEXRAD outages will appear below. If you cannot find your FTM on this page, visit the NWS site.

Alternate Sources Of FTM Data:

*Due to the moving of the NWS servers in May 2003, data from May 5th at 10:25 am to May 7th at 8:15 pm Eastern were lost.
