"Anvil, Mammatus, Flanking Tower"

Science Building
UNC-Asheville
Asheville, NC

1993

This picture was taken literally from the roof of the Science Building on the UNCA Campus one evening. After seeing the VIP-6 storm approaching on radar (I've got a picture of the radar screen somewhere, I'll post it here when I find it), myself and a bunch of the other meteorology majors climbed out the window to the roof to view the storm roll in. This is a heck of a nice picture of Thunderstorm components, especially considering it was taken in the mountains of NC! We see some small Mm clouds in the foreground, on the underside of the anvil. In the middle of the picture (see blowup below) we see a beautiful Flanking Tower, building an anvil of its own. A closeup of the Mm clouds when they were overhead can also be seen in this set as "Mm Clouds over UNCA".
