NWS Observation Deck
Asheville Airport
Fletcher, NC
July 1994
This picture was taken looking straight up from the observation deck of the National Weather Service office in Asheville, NC. I had just been out to take an observation at the time. As I recall a large severe thunderstorm was moving over the area at the time. I call this phenomenon "honeycomb" for lack of a better name; there may be another name for it. The clouds become celluar, sort of like pre-mammatus. I have seen this "honeycomb" effect several times prior to stong or severe thunderstorms in North Carolina.
