You'll find on these pages the most up-to-date list of tropical lightning images (see also U.S. and World lightning) anywhere on the Internet. Why? Because WeatherMatrix Members constantly Quality Control the links, making sure that none go stale, and constantly monitor the Internet for new lightning images.

DID YOU KNOW? True tropical systems, especially hurricanes, contain little if any lightning, despite the severity of the rain and wind. Outer bands of tropical systems are more likely to have lightning.

AWC-KC Lightning Data Discontinued -- May 3, 2002: The worldwide near-shore lightning data service offered by the Aviation Weather Center (Tropical shown at left) has been discontinued by the lightning monopoly Global Atmospherics Inc. You must now be a participating government agency to look at the data.
UPDATE JUN 9, 2002 -- AWC has created a similar-looking product which is entirely satellite based and not using actual lightning data (see explanation). You can tell this because the storms over open oceans are now detected. AWC clarifies, saying that although current lightning data is not used, it was when developing the algorithm: "During the development of the algorithm, remotely sensed lightning was used for ground truth of thunderstorm existence. The National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) was augmented with data from the Canadian Lightning Detection Network (CLDN), and network data from Japan, France, and Germany. Global Atmospheric, Inc. (GAI) processed these data with a long range detection algorithm. These long range lightning data are useful to a range of 2000-4000 km and location accuracy of 16-32 km. "

Nonetheless, it may be of some use to note where convective storms exist. Here are the shots: TROPICAL ATLANTIC / PACIFIC (NO SAT) | WORLD (NO SAT) (ANIM) | MORE...
