GREATEST HITS: The Best Lightning Data From HQ

NOTE: THIS SECTION HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED IN 2003 BUT WILL SOON BE.

The Boltek (mapping) lightning detector was installed at HQ in mid-April 2001. Since then we have had a few really strong days. Links to the best are below.

WeatherMatrix HeadQuarters was struck by lightning in 2000. It went down the main weather station pole, through the StormWise detector on the Texas Weather Instruments station, damaging it, and into the ground. Read more about it here.

THE MOTHER OF ALL STORM DAYS so far was July 1, 2001 with 114,506 strikes and a maximum of 652 strikes per minute. 313 Strong Strokes were detected. 11:59PM CAPTURE | TEXT SUMMARY | RADAR ANIMATION (press "animate")

Our first big day after the installation of the detector was 61,822 strikes in the 24 hours of June 12th, 2001, with a maximum of 509 strikes per minute. 341 Strong Strokes were detected. 11:59PM CAPTURE | TEXT SUMMARY

June 22, 2001 was also a strong day, with Over 65,000 strokes detected. But, the storms weren't close - only 54 strong strokes were detected with a max of 255 strokes per minute. 11:59PM CAPTURE | TEXT SUMMARY

The same "509" max stroke count from 6/12 was achieved again on August 19th, 2001, see here for a complete storm chase report with video captures. 11:59PM CAPTURE | TEXT SUMMARY
