I understand the physics and reasoning behind the cups taking time to respond to the wind. Back to my obsrvations on my homemade dc motor anemometer hooked up to an analog voltmeter. The cups were 4" aluminum funnels with the ends cut off and sealed on 8" long light steel tubing. I calibrated it in a vehicle on a calm day (not exactly a wind tunnel). It read the same as my Davis Weather Wizard III during steady winds. However, during quick and short duration gusts of wind it would nearly always register a significantly higher speed - even though it was much larger and heavier than the small plastic cups. Also, the threshold speed on my homemade unit was about 1/2 mph. Larger cups are more sensitive. Physics or no physics, the field tests were what they were. By the way, that anemometer with its 25 cent motor still worked when I finally dismantled it some six years later.
Sincerely,
Steve
