I believe that the prong type is a hot-wire wind speed sensor. I'm not sure how it functions. Also, I made an anemometer with a small dc motor that measures the current of the spinning cups. With an analog volt meter it definitely picked up higher gust readings, and read the same as my Weather Wizard III during steady winds.
