As of late Wednesday morning, EDT, Tropical Depression 10-E is
spinning over the eastern North Pacific Ocean. The depression has top
sustained winds of 35 mph about a center which is 1230 miles to the
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; it is moving westward at 13 mph.
The cyclone is forecast to become a tropical storm, but its forecast
path is over wide open seas for the next three days.
A fierce wind storm continued without pause Wednesday at the
Mawson base on the shores of East Antarctica. Starting Saturday,
sustained winds blowing 45-85 mph whipped this Australian outpost for
more than 90 hours as of late Wednesday, local time.
A strong cold front brought a dramatic change in the weather to
Cape Town, South Africa, Wednesday. On Tuesday, this city was
abnormally hot; the high of 99 degrees was more than 30 degrees above
average. Exactly twenty-four hours after setting this high, the
temperature stood at 57 degrees Wednesday afternoon, or more than 40
degrees lower!
Torrential rain inundated much of southern Thailand early this
week. At Suphan Buri, rainfall was about 13.5 inches within 48 hours
from late Monday to late Wednesday, local time. Other rainy standouts
were Chanthaburi with 7.8 inches, Prachin Buri with 7.5 inches and Lop
Buri with 7.3 inches.
In central India, Nagpur was doused by about 8.4 inches of rain
within 30 hours as of late Wednesday, local time.
The first half of this week was unusually chilly across middle
South America. In Paraguay, for example, Asuncion could only muster a
high of 55 degrees Tuesday, even though this capital city has an
average daily high of 83 degrees near the middle of September. Monday
afternoon and evening, wet snow fell over Serra Geral of southern
Brazil at Bom Jesus. Snow also whitened parts of La Paz, the Bolivian
capital, Wednesday morning; the snow accumulated two inches deep at
the El Alto International Airport. Other places in Bolivia also
received unusual bursts of heavy snow early Wednesday. Oruro got 3
inches and Potosi was covered by 2 inches.
