        World Weather Summary
Updated: September 11, 2005 9:32 a.m.
As of early Sunday, Typhoon Khanun is centered over the East
China Sea, nearing landfall with east-central China. The storm
has weakened since Saturday as sustained winds are now only
around 100 mph. The direction of movement continues to be
to the northwest at 14 mph. Landfall will be made on Sunday
over the Zhejiang province of China. Khanun will remain on a
northwest track after landfall is made, but the storm will
quickly dissipate as Monday may only see the strongest wind
gusts of 30-60 mph. Even as the winds ease a bit, the heavy
rains will persist. Much of the Zhejiang province on northward
to the Jiangsu province will receive this heavy rainfall
through Monday, creating a high risk for flooding.

Heavy rains and strong winds affected Japan's Ryukyu
Islands on Saturday with the passage of Typhoon Khanun.
Ishigaki, near Okinawa, had a rainfall total of 3.82 inches
as winds were sustained between 25-50 mph for much of the
day. Heavy rains also drenched the mainland of Japan on
Saturday. Fukue, near Nagasaki, recorded 10 inches of rain
since late Friday as Miyakojima in Osaka had received 4.02
inches of rain since Saturday as winds here gusted between
25-60 mph. Nearly 6 inches of rain fell at Shimizu in
Nagoya.

It has been quite warm over parts of eastern Europe during
early September. Many locations, such as Warsaw, Minsk, Kiev
and Moscow, have recorded highs in the 70s and 80s, some
4-8 degrees above normal.
