As of early Saturday, Typhoon Khanun was near 24 degrees north and
125 degrees east or south of Okinawa. The direction of movement was
to the northwest at 14 mph with sustained winds at 115 mph. Over the
next 24 hours, Khanun will remain at its current strength as the
storm continues to head to the northwest. By Sunday afternoon,
Khanun is expected to make landfall over the Zhejiang province
in east-central China. Khanun will quickly lose it's strong winds
over the Zhejiang province by Monday, but heavy rains from this
storm will greatly rise the potential for flooding.
In eastern India, Bhubaneswar was soaked by about 8.0 inches of
rain within 27 hours Thursday to Friday. Since then, another 2.99
inches fell. Also, Bombay received heavy falls of rain from
thunderstorms as the rainfall total here for Friday was 8.19 inches.
It has been quite warm over parts of central and eastern Europe
during early September. Many locations, such as Berlin, Frankfurt,
Vienna and Warsaw, have recorded highs in the 80s for much of the
month. This is about 6-12 degrees above normal.
