As of late Friday morning, EDT, Typhoon Khanun is churning the
open waters of the Philippine Sea. Centered 480 miles to the
east-southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, the storm has top sustained winds of
100 mph; it is moving northwestward at 17 mph. Khanun is forecast to
strengthen on a northwestward heading through late Saturday. On this
path, the typhoon would cross the southernmost of Japan's Ryukyu
Islands Friday night to Saturday; Khanun's severe weather would extend
to much of northern Taiwan during this time.
In eastern India, Bhubaneswar was soaked by about 8.0 inches of
rain within 27 hours Thursday to Friday. This dousing represents 80
percent of September's average rainfall here.
For the second time this week, showers and thunderstorms dumped a
month's worth of rain in Nice on southern France's coastal Riviera.
About 2.8 inches of rain fell here within 24 hours from Thursday
morning to Friday morning. Earlier, 2.8 inches of rain also fell from
Tuesday to Wednesday. The 5.6-inch tally from these two rain storms is
more than double September's average rainfall which is 2.4 inches.
In both London, England, and Paris, France, the first eight days
of September were warmer than usual by about 8.5 degrees.
