As of late Thursday morning, EDT, Typhoon Khanun is churning the
open waters of the Philippine Sea. Centered 705 miles east-northeast
of Manila, Philippines, and 810 miles southeast of Taipei, Taiwan, the
storm has top sustained winds of 75 mph; it is moving
north-northwestward at 14 mph. Khanun is forecast to strengthen on a
northwestward path that would lead it to Taiwan where a landfall is
possible later Saturday or Saturday night.
Yuzhno-Kuril'sk, Kunashir Island, Russia, was soaked by 3.5 inches
of rain within 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday from the remnants
of Typhoon Nabi. This was more than 50% of September's average
rainfall.
Early Thursday, a low temperature of -109.5 degrees was registered
at Russia's Vostok base on the lofty ice cap of East Antarctica. This
was about 10 degrees below average.
Thursday, about 3.2 inches of rain fell within six hours at
Aurangabad in western India.
Soaking showers and thunderstorms left 5.9 inches of rain within
30 hours at Nangapinoh on Indonesia's portion of Borneo.
