World Weather Summary
Updated: September 2, 2005 11:27 a.m.
Super Typhoon Nabi is churning the open Philippine Sea. Late
Friday morning, EDT, the extremely dangerous Nabi has highest
sustained winds of 150 mph about an eye which is 475 miles to the
southwest of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Japan, and 645 miles southeast
of Naha, Okinawa, Japan; it is moving towards the northwest at 10 mph.
Nabi is forecast to become even stronger as it makes its way
northwestward across the Philippine Sea during the next 48 hours. The
big, powerful typhoon will thrash Japan's Ryukyu Islands, including
Okinawa, beginning late Saturday and likely continuing through Monday.
Rainfall linked to the remnants of Typhoon Talim was excessive in
parts of southeastern China Thursday to Friday. In Jiangxi province,
Lu Shan got 15.1 inches of rain within 24 hours.
Forty-eight hour rainfall ended late Friday, local time, was
about 9.5 inches at Nakhon Ratchasima in south-central Thailand.
Rainfall at Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, was 1.5 inches within 24
hours from Thursday morning to Friday morning. While hardly excessive,
this was a wet start to September here in this town on the western
shores of Hudson Bay -- the average rainfall for the month is 2.1
inches, so this accounted for about 70% of the monthly mean.
