        World Weather Summary
Updated: September 1, 2005 12:00 a.m.
Talim passed over Taiwan as a typhoon Wednesday, crossed the
Taiwan Strait Wednesday night and landed in eastern mainland China
early Thursday as a tropical storm. Late Thursday morning, EDT,
Tropical Storm Talim is centered inland over western Fujian province
near Mingxi (Guihua) where its highest sustained winds are down to 40
mph; it is moving west-northwestward at 17 mph. Talim will weaken and
eventually dissipate over southeastern China during the next 2-3 days,
but the threat of heavy rain will persist.

Typhoon Talim thrashed Taiwan Wednesday and Wednesday night as it
crossed the rugged island. Rainfall at Tainan was 7.8 inches. Winds
reached 75 mph at Taipei.

Heavy rain also soaked parts of southeastern China Wednesday night
and Thursday as Talim, by then a tropical storm, made its second
landfall. In northeastern Fujian province, rainfall as of late
Thursday, local time, was 9.4 inches at Fuding.

Nabi is a big, strong and still strengthening typhoon over the
eastern Philippine Sea. Late Thursday morning, EDT, Typhoon Nabi has
highest sustained winds of 145 mph about an eye which is 455 miles
south-southwest of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Japan; it is moving
towards the northwest at 12 mph. Nabi is forecast to become even
stronger as it makes its way northwestward across the Philippine Sea
during the next 2-3 days. Ultimately, the storm will probably threaten
Japan's Ryukyu Islands.

Wednesday was unusually warm, even hot, in much of western Europe.
In southern Spain, temperatures climbed into the upper 90s in some
places, and there were scattered highs in the middle 90s in the
southern half of France. Paris soared to 92 degrees whereas the
average daily high at the end of August is 72. The 89-degree high
recorded at London's Heathrow airport in England was also a full 20
degrees above average.

Heavy rain linked to the remnants of Hurricane Katrina swept over
parts of far southeastern Canada from southern Quebec to New Brunswick
Wednesday and Wednesday night. In Quebec, Charlevoix was inundated
with 7.9 inches of rain and Pointe Noire was drenched by 4.1 inches of
rain. Most of greater Montreal got hit by 3-4 inches of rain.
