[STORMREPORTS] Tornado in Cumberland County, PA
NWS - State College confirms that a strong F1 moved through Cumberland County, PA (just southwest of Harrisburg, PA) around 1:15 AM EDT on 31, August 2005. This is from the remnants of Hurricane Katrina, getting out on last punch before she died. The storm was well forecast as NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Adams County (to our south) for a radar indicated tornado just north of Gettysburg. Great job by the local NBC Station WGAL for keeping with the storm and tracking it up US-15, showing rotation the whole time. NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Cumberland County and within 2-4 minutes we lost power. Little did I know this was the tornado already slicing through a neighborhood less than a mile from my house.
I remember it was very still, then the wind picked up drastically. Clouds were very low to the ground, there was a distant roar and then it was over. Within 10 minutes the sound of crickets filled the air however, it was tainted by the sound of fire engine sirens and chain saws below the ridge line from me. There was no light as power was out - just the glow from the flood lamps and the reflection of red and blue strobe lights on the settling fog.
Most of the damage is tree damage, very little structural damage except for some roofs that had trees through them, sheds destroyed, shingles and shutters and gutters ripped off. Most of the damage was uprooted and snapped off trees.
