evening, then cross the Taiwan Strait before making a second landfall,
probably as a tropical storm, in eastern mainland China on Thursday.
Wednesday, the eye of Typhoon Talim passed a short distance to the
south of the Japan's southernmost Ryukyu Islands. In doing so,
Ishigaki Shima was thrashed by sustained winds that reached at least
70 mph. Rainfall was 5.0 inches within twelve hours.
Nabi is a big, strong and still strengthening typhoon over the
eastern Philippine Sea near the Northern Mariana Islands. Late
Wednesday morning, EDT, Typhoon Nabi has highest sustained winds of
120 mph about an eye which is 265 miles north-northwest of Agana,
Guam; it is moving towards the west-northwest at 13 mph. Forecasts
call for Nabi to become a very powerful typhoon as it makes its way
across the Philippine Sea during the next 2-3 days. Ultimately, the
storm may threaten Japan's Ryukyu Islands.
Typhoon Nabi crossed the Northern Mariana Islands late Tuesday and
Tuesday night, EDT, on its way to the Philippine Sea. The storm passed
near Saipan where wind gusts to at least 70 mph were clocked. At
Agana, Guam, rainfall was 4.7 inches.
Soaking rain hit parts of Indochina Tuesday to Wednesday. Thanh
Hoa, Vietnam, was drenched by 6.9 inches of rain within 24 hours and
Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, got 6.5 inches.
Tuesday and Tuesday night saw hit-or-miss downpours in the
Bahamas. Nassau, the capital city, caught a couple of cloudbursts.
Total rainfall was 3.4 inches.
A cold storm unloaded heavy precipitation on western Argentina's
province of Mendoza from late Monday to early Wednesday. At San
Rafael, 4.9 inches of rain fell within about 36 hours as temperatures
hovered in the middle and upper 30s. This tally was about 10 times the
average for all of August. Closer to the Andes and about 2000 feet
higher, the storm covered Malargue with 9 inches of snow. Here,
Tuesday's high of 34 degrees was 25 degrees below average.
