Talim is a powerful typhoon crossing the Philippine Sea. As of
late Monday morning, EDT, Talim wields highest sustained winds of 140
mph about an eye which is 420 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan,
and 690 miles east-southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The typhoon is moving
westward at 13 mph. Talim is forecast to remain a very dangerous storm
during the next 2 days as it takes on a west-northwestward heading.
The storm will probably threaten Taiwan and Japan's southernmost
Ryukyu Islands Wednesday to Thursday.
A tropical depression is spinning over the western North Pacific
Ocean near the Northern Mariana Islands. Late Monday morning, EDT, the
depression has highest sustained winds near 35 mph about a center
which is 495 miles east-northeast of Agana, Guam; it is moving towards
the west at 9 mph. Forecasts call for this cyclone to strengthen
steadily, thereby soon becoming a tropical storm, and to move largely
towards the west-northwest during the next 2-3 days. On this projected
course, the cyclone would cross the Marianas north of Saipan late
Tuesday or Tuesday night as a strong tropical storm.
August has been unusually rainy in Helsinki, Finland, and recent
days have been particularly wet. Seventy-two hour rainfall ended
midday Monday, local time, was 2.0 inches. This lifted the monthly
tally to 6.1 inches; this amount is more than double the monthly
average of 2.8 inches.
Soaking rain pelted the central coast of Vietnam from late Sunday
to late Monday, local time. At Da Nang, 24-hour rainfall was 6.6
inches while Hue was doused by 5.0 inches during the same interval.
