        World Weather Summary
Updated: August 28, 2005 12:53 a.m.
Hurricane Katrina continues to move slowly through the Gulf of
Mexico. Over the weekend, Katrina has strengthened to be one of the
strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever. Katrina is a Category 5 with
sustained winds of 175 mph with gusts over 200 mph. Katrina brought
some heavy rain to portions of southern Florida and the Florida Keys
Friday as it reemerged into the Gulf. Key West, Florida, received
nearly 10 inches of rain from Katrina. Katrina will continue to churn
through the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico Sunday and Monday
before making landfall across the central Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Talim has reached typhoon status. As of early Sunday
morning, Tamlin was located near 19.4 degrees north and 137.6 degrees
east. Maximum sustained winds were 75 mph, with gust to 85 mph.
Tamlin was moving northwestward at 16 mph. This track will continue
Sunday before turning more toward the west on Monday. Further
strengthening is likely. The current forecasted track would bring
Tamlin over Taiwan by the middle of the week.

Heavy rain fell over portions of Indonesia Saturday. Padang
received 6.61 inches of rainfall.

Heavy rains have soaked Calcutta, India over the last several
days. Since Wednesday, more than 15.0 inches of rain has fallen. This
accounts for more than the normal amount of rainfall for the entire
month of August. In fact, month-to-date, Calcutta has received over
22.0 inches of rainfall, or nearly 190 percent of the normal
rainfall.

For the fifth day in a row, Madrid, Spain saw afternoon
temperatures break the 90 degree mark. To put this into perspective,
Madrid's normal high temperature at the end of August is 82 degrees.
In fact, since June 1, temperatures have been nearly 7 degrees above
normal. During the same period, rainfall has been scarce, with only 3
percent of the normal rainfall of 1.92 inches.
