World Weather Summary
Updated: August 27, 2005 12:45 a.m.
As Hurricane Katrina continues to move over the Gulf of Mexico,
heavy rainfall with the storm and strong winds helped to make it quite
memorable for the Florida Keys. Friday afternoon saw winds sustained
at more than 50 mph with gusts of over 70 mph. Rainfall also made for
quite an impressive amount as 9.55 inches of rain in Key West,
Florida, made for the 4th rainiest day ever recorded since 1871.
Katrina is expected to move towards the central Gulf Coast through the
weekend before making a second landfall.
Tropical Storm Mawar is finally weakening to tropical-storm-force
and is expected to die off over the next 12-24 hours. This storm will
be remembered by much of Japan as parts of the country saw over 6.0
inches of rain. Tokyo saw wind gusts of up to 60 mph and about 4.0
inches of rain with the storm.
As of early Saturday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Talim was
continuing to push north-northwest at 12 mph and through the
Philippine Sea. The storm was near 16.6 degrees North and 141.2
degrees East, or around 200 miles northeast of Guam. With the track
expected to gradually turn more west over the next 24-48 hours, the
storm could effect Taiwan and mainland China by the early to middle
part of next week.
Rainfall for Padang, Indonesia, exceeded more than 6.6 inches of
rain, ending late Saturday morning, local time.
Calcutta, India, has seen 8.7 inches of rain from Wednesday
through early Saturday morning, local time. This accounted for about
70% of the average rainfall for the entire month of August. The total
rainfall for the month over the city has been nearly 15 inches of
rain, or nearly 120% of the normal rainfall for the month.
The heat continues for Madrid, Spain, as the mercury climbed to
95 again on Friday, well above the normal high of 82. The average
temperature since June 1st has been nearly 7 degrees above normal,
while rainfall for the same period is only 0.06 inches, only 3% of
the normal rainfall of 1.90 inches.
