World Weather Summary
Updated: August 26, 2005 12:00 a.m.
Having moved over most of eastern Japan as a typhoon, Tropical
Storm Mawar is now heading for wide open waters of the northwestern
Pacific Ocean. Late Friday morning, EDT, Mawar has highest sustained
winds of 70 mph. Centered 365 miles to the east-northeast of Tokyo,
the storm is moving towards the east-northeast at 20 mph. Mawar will
weaken on an open-water path that will take it south of Russia's Kuril
Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula during the next 2-3 days.
Mawar unloaded 11.5 inches on the Japanese island of O Shima. On
Honshu, the "big island", Omae Zaki was soaked by 6.4 inches of rain
while Choshi got 6.1 inches. Greater Tokyo was lashed by wind gusts of
50-60 mph and about 4.0 inches of rain.
As of late Friday morning, EDT, a new tropical depression is over
the southeastern Philippine Sea. With top sustained winds near 35 mph,
the storm is centered 205 miles west-southwest of Agana, Guam, and 345
miles northeast of Yap Island; it is moving westward at 10 mph. The
cyclone is forecast to strengthen steadily, thereby becoming a
tropical storm soon, and to take on a northwestward heading which
would lead it over the central Philippine Sea during the next 2-3
days.
Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Irwin is
spinning south of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. Late Monday
morning, EDT, Irwin has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph about a
center which is 355 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and 130
miles to the east-southeast of Isla Socorro, one of Mexico's
Revillagigedo Islands; movement is towards the west at 12 mph. Irwin
is forecast to maintain its westward heading and to change little in
strength through the weekend. On this course, the storm would pass
over the Revillagigedo Islands late Friday and Saturday, then aim for
wide open seas.
In Calcutta, India, 8.7 inches of rain fell from Wednesday
afternoon to Friday evening, local time. This accounted for about 70%
of the average rainfall for all of August.
Twenty-four hour rainfall ended early Friday, local time, was 7.4
inches at Timika on Indonesia's portion of the island of New Guinea.
