World Weather Summary
Updated: August 24, 2005 11:55 a.m.
Typhoon Mawar is bearing down upon southern Japan from the
Philippine Sea. Late Wednesday morning, Mawar is centered 350 miles to
the south-southwest of Tokyo where it holds highest sustained winds of
120 mph; it is moving northward at 12 mph. Mawar is forecast to remain
a formidable storm through its landfall in southern Honshu Island
Thursday morning. On its projected path, the storm's core would come
ashore to the southwest of Tokyo. Damaging winds and flooding rain
will spread over a large part of the country beginning Wednesday
evening.
Tropical Storm Guchol is spinning over the western North Pacific
Ocean, but it is no threat to land. As of late Wednesday morning, EDT,
Guchol wields top sustained winds near 65 mph. Centered 925 miles to
the east-northeast of Tokyo, Japan, the storm is moving northwestward
at 23 mph. Guchol is forecast to weaken and to transform into an
extra-tropical cyclone on a northeastward bearing that would keep it
over open seas for at least the next 2-3 days.
Hurricane Hilary continues to churn the waters of the eastern
North Pacific Ocean. As of late Wednesday morning, EDT, Hilary holds
top sustained winds of 75 mph about a center which is 545 miles to the
west of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; the storm is moving west-northwestward
at 10 mph. Hilary is forecast to turn westward during the next 2-3
days and to weaken as it moves over cooler, wide-open seas.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms soaked Buenos Aires the first half
of this week. Seventy-two hour rainfall ended Wednesday morning was
5.3 inches at the Ezeiza airport on the city's outskirts while 3.5
inches of rain poured down close to the city center. These downpours
were unusually heavy for this time of the year as the average rainfall
for all of August is about 2.7 inches.
Parts of southern China have been pelted by heavy rain lately.
Near the border with Myanmar, rainfall was 6.1 inches within 48 hours
as of Wednesday morning, local time, at Lancang.
Unusually hot and dry weather this summer has fostered the burning
of many wildfires in Portugal. Since June 1st, Lisbon has been hotter
than usual by an average of 6 degrees.
In stark contrast, heavy rain over central Europe this week has
instigated deadly flooding in Austria, Switzerland, Romania, Bulgaria
and Germany. In southern Germany, dry weather returned Wednesday, but
rainfall within 72 hours ended Wednesday morning was 6.2 inches in
Hohenpeissenberg and 5.1 inches at Wendelstein.
