        World Weather Summary
Updated: August 23, 2005 11:29 a.m.
Mawar is a strong typhoon over the northeastern Philippine Sea.
Late Tuesday morning, EDT, Typhoon Mawar has highest sustained winds
of 120 mph about an eye which is 320 miles northwest of Iwo Jima,
Volcano Islands, Japan, and 595 miles south-southwest of Tokyo; it is
moving north-northwestward at 10 mph. Mawar is forecast to remain a
formidable storm during the next 36-48 hours as it makes its way
towards the north-northwest. By Wednesday night or early Thursday, the
storm's core will probably make landfall in southern mainland Japan.

Tropical Storm Guchol is also spinning over the western North
Pacific Ocean, but it is no threat to land. As of late Tuesday
morning, EDT, Guchol wields top sustained winds of 65 mph. Centered
530 miles to the east of Tokyo, Japan, the storm is moving
northwestward at 17 mph. Guchol is forecast to slowly weaken and to
accelerate on a northeastward bearing that would keep it over open
seas for at least the next 2-3 days.

Hurricane Hilary is churning the waters of the eastern North
Pacific Ocean. As of late Tuesday morning, EDT, Hilary holds top
sustained winds of 80 mph about a center which is 400 miles to the
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and 105 miles north-northwest of
Isla Clarion, one of Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands; the storm is
moving west-northwestward at 10 mph. Hilary is forecast to maintain
its heading towards the west-northwest during the next 2-3 days. The
storm will weaken as it moves over cooler, wide-open seas.

Tropical Storm Jose brought very heavy rain to parts of
southeastern Mexico Monday to early Tuesday as it moved inland from
the far southern Gulf of Mexico. In the state of Veracruz, 24-hour
rainfall as of Tuesday morning was 4.1 inches at Jalapa.

Monday was unusually hot in southern Saskatchewan, Canada. The
provincial capital, Regina, for example, soared a full 20 degrees
above average to reach 94. Moose Jaw and Val Marie also soared to 94
degrees while Assiniboia spiked to 95.

Drenching thunderstorms broke out over portions of central and
northeastern Argentina as well as in Uruguay late Monday into Tuesday.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, rainfall was 2.8 inches within only twelve
hours as of Tuesday morning. These downpours were unusually heavy for
August -- the average rainfall for the whole month is about 2.7
inches.

A big, slow-moving storm dropped very heavy rain on parts of
southern Germany from Sunday to Tuesday. Obertsdorf was soaked by 5.6
inches of rain; Hohenpeissenberg got 5.3 inches.
