World Weather Summary
Updated: August 21, 2005 5:56 a.m.
As of early Sunday, two tropical systems continue to spin
over the western Pacific. The first and strongest of these
two systems is Typhoon Mawar, centered near 22 north and
140 east or to the northwest of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Mawar is tracking to the northwest at 7 mph as sustained
winds average around 90 mph. Mawar will continue to strengthen
over the next three days as the storm maintains a northwesterly
direction of movement. At the storms peak, sustained winds
should be around 125 mph, which would occur sometime between
Monday evening and Wednesday morning. Mawar will pass to the
west of Iwo Jima on Monday and set it's sights on Japan.
Landfall with Japan is possible on Thursday.
The second system is Tropical Storm Guchol, which is located
to the east of Mawar around 25 north and 148 east or east of
the Bonin and Volcano Islands. Sustained winds with Guchol are
around 45 mph. Guchol should also gather more strength over
the next several days, perhaps becoming a typhoon sometime
by midweek. The storm will take a northwesterly track, but the
storm should stay to the east of Japan and slowly start curving
to the northeast and away from any major landmasses by Thursday.
In the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Hilary has now
strengthen into a hurricane near 14 north and 104 west or to
the west of Mexico. Winds with Hilary are around 75 mph. Hilary
will stay well west of Mexico as the storm takes a northwesterly
track. Some further strengthening of Hilary is expected over
the next couple of days.
Rain that fell across Indonesia and Malaysia over the past
couple of days did bring some locations a decent soaking.
Kokonao and Padang in Indonesia had rainfall totals of 4.92
and 3.19 of an inch of rain as Sittiawan in Malaysia received
6.33 inches.
The past two days have seen heavy rains soak Pao-An, China.
This city in China has recorded a rainfall total of 6.50 inches
during this two day period.
Salina Cruz, Mexico, located on the coast of the Gulf of
Tehuantepec, has received over 4.40 inches of rain over the past
couple of days.
