        World Weather Summary
Updated: August 20, 2005 8:22 a.m.
The tropical depression in the western Pacific has been
upgraded to a tropical storm named Mawar. As of early Saturday,
Mawar was centered at 21.1 north and 141.7 east or about 250 miles
south of Iwo Jima. Mawar has sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving
to the northwest at 6 mph. It should continue to strengthen through
early next week as it remains on a northwesterly course passing to
the west of Iwo Jima later Sunday. There is a good chance that Mawar
will strengthen into a typhoon by Monday and it is expected to turn
to the north. This will take it on a path to threaten southern Japan
toward the middle of next week.

A new tropical depression has formed in the western Pacific. As of
early Saturday, it was centered neat 22.7 north and 150.5 east or
about 600 miles east of Iwo Jima. The depression has sustained winds
of 35 mph and any strengthening will necessitate an upgrade to a
tropical storm which would be named Guchol. The depression is moving
through a favorable area for development and should become a tropical
storm in the next 24 hours or so. A general west-northwestward course
is foreseen the next few days taking the system across the open West
Pacific and eventually near or just north of the Bonin Islands
(located to the south-southeast of Japan) early next week.

In the eastern Pacific, the tropical depression has been upgraded
to a Tropical Storm named Hillary. As of early Saturday, Hillary was
located about 220 miles south-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico.
Sustained winds of 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph will increase as the
day goes on, and Hillary is expected to become a hurricane on Sunday,
as it parallels the Mexican coast. Most computer guidance gradually
takes the storm on a more northwesterly track as it moves well
southwest of Cabo San Lucas over the next several days.

A strong storm fed with energy from the former Hurricane Irene
lashed southeastern Greenland with very high winds Friday. At
Ikermiuarsuk, sustained winds reached 70 mph. Farther northeast along
the coast, Ikermiit clocked winds of 65 mph early Saturday as the
storm blew through.

Monsoon rains in India were locally torrential the past couple of
days. Bhubaneswar had 3.46 inches of rain Friday, most of which fell
in less than 6 hours. Gauhati, meanwhile, received a 2 day total of
7.36 inches Thursday and Friday.
