World Weather Summary
Updated: August 19, 2005 12:28 a.m.
Late Friday morning, EDT, a new tropical depression over the
western North Pacific Ocean is quickly gathering strength. With top
sustained winds of 35 mph, the depression is centered 275 miles to the
south-southeast of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands; it is
nearly stationary. The cyclone is forecast to soon become a tropical
storm, to strengthen markedly during the next 2-3 days and to begin
moving northwestward. On this projected course, the storm's core would
pass to the south of Iwo Jima Saturday, but some of its stormy weather
could extend to the Volcano Islands.
A new tropical depression is also plying the waters of the eastern
North Pacific Ocean south of eastern Mexico as of late Friday morning,
EDT. The depression has highest sustained winds near 30 mph; centered
about 385 miles southeast of Acapulco, Mexico, it is moving towards
the west-northwest at 14 mph. The cyclone is forecast to strengthen
steadily on a heading generally towards the west-northwest during the
next 2-3 days; therefore, it will likely become a tropical storm on
Friday night or Saturday. On the projected path, the storm's core
would stay over open seas through the weekend, although heavy rain is
possible in southern Mexico.
A strong storm fed with energy from the former Hurricane Irene
lashed southeastern Greenland with very high winds Friday. At
Ikermiuarsuk, sustained winds reached 70 mph.
Recent days have been quite rainy along some stretches of
Guangdong coast in southeastern China. At Shangchuan Dao, for example,
rainfall was 11.0 inches within 3.5 days as of late Friday, local
time. Of this total, 8.5 inches of rain poured down in the last 36
hours of the period.
Fierce winds battered New Zealand's Stewart Island Friday.
Sustained winds blew steadily between 50 and 70 mph at South West
Cape.
This week was unusually chilly in Alberta, Canada. In the capital,
Edmonton, consecutive highs Monday through Thursday were 51, 50, 56
and 49 degrees whereas average daily highs in this part of August are
in the lower 70s. Additionally, the temperature dipped to 32 degrees
Friday morning; this was just one degree shy of the record low for the
date. In Calgary, the province's largest city, the mean of the highs
from Monday through Thursday was about 19 degrees below average.
