The disputed Dongsha Islands of the South China Sea were pelted by
heavy rain Wednesday to Thursday. Rainfall was 6.9 inches within 36
hours. These islands, also known as the Tungsha Islands and the Pratas
Islands, are administered by Taiwan.
Thundery downpours deposited 4.7 inches of rain within 30 hours
from Tuesday evening to Wednesday night, local time, at Pago Pago on
the Samoan island of Tutuila. This rainfall was about 70% of the
average rainfall for all of August.
Wednesday was hot right to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in
parts of Tunisia. At Tabarqa, the high was 104 degrees, or a full 15
degrees above average.
Rainfall from Sunday evening to Thursday morning was at least 10.4
inches at Puerto Lempira, northeastern Honduras.
