A tropical wave triggered downpours in parts of southeastern
Mexico early Tuesday morning. At Coatzacoalcos, rainfall was 5.6
inches, or about 55% of the monthly mean, within only six hours.
Tuesday, a storm lashed Iceland's tiny island of Heimaey. At
Vestmannaeyjar, sustained winds blowing 50-60 mph whipped rain through
the air.
A sluggish storm pelted the Alps of southern Germany and Austria
with heavy rain and snow Sunday through Tuesday. Atop Zugspitze,
Germany's highest point, precipitation was 2.4 inches, mostly falling
as snow. Snow depth was lifted seven inches, but actual snowfall was
likely much higher. At Wendelstein, 3.6 inches of cold rain fell.
Feuerkogel, Austria, was soaked by 4.5 inches of rain.
In northeastern China, thundery downpours unloaded 5.0 inches of
rain within twelve hours Tuesday at Tianjin.
