World Weather Summary
Updated: August 15, 2005 11:38 a.m.
Much of southern and central Spain as well as most of
Portugal has been suffering through a prolonged drought;
reportedly one of the worst in 60 years. Since the beginning
of this year, precipitation has been less than 40 percent of
normal in most of this region. Madrid, Spain, which normally
has nearly 10.00 inches of precipitation by the middle of
August, has had only 2.76 inches so far this year. Lisbon,
Portugal normally has 16.33 inches by this time, but so far
this year only 4.03 inches has occurred. This has prompted
many cities to impose water restrictions.
The drought in Spain and Portugal has led to hotter than
normal weather recently. Lisbon, has soared into the mid 90s
the past 3 days. Normal mid-August high temperatures are in
the upper 70s in Lisbon. Madrid reached the mid to upper 90s
Friday and Saturday, then spiked to 100 degrees Sunday and
Monday.
A sweltering heat wave gripped central China late last week.
High temperatures were in the mid and upper 90s in most
locations with some spots topping the century mark. What made
the heat so unbearable though was the stifling humidity. Heat
indices were as high as 120 degrees. A strong cold front moved
through Sunday and brought relief from the heat, but also
triggered strong thunderstorms. In Guanghua, 2.29 inches of
rain occurred in just a short time. Meanwhile, Fangxian had 4.45
inches in just a few hours with a 24 hour total of 5.32 inches.
Fernanda, in the eastern Pacific, has been downgraded to a
tropical storm. It now has sustained winds of 65 mph and is heading
to the west-southwest at 9 mph. Fernanda is now encountering
cooler waters and it should continue to weaken as it heads on a
west-southwest path through the open Eastern Pacific, dissipating
somewhere well southeast of Hawaii.
Greg, in the eastern Pacific, has been downgraded to a tropical
depression. Greg is crawling to the west at 3 mph with sustained
winds of 35 mph. Greg is now expected to remain weak and unorganized
over the open waters of the eastern Pacific and it is not expected to
redevelop.
Irene is now a minimal hurricane in the Western Atlantic. As of
5 am EDT, Monday morning, Irene was located about 410 miles east of
Cape Hattaras, North Carolina. Irene is now moving to the northeast
at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. A turn to the
east-northeast is expected later today along with a gradual
acceleration. Irene should remain over the open water of the western
Atlantic and the only affect on the east coast of the United States
and Bermuda will be rough surf the next few days.
