Mumbai (Bombay), India, was pounded by torrential rain that
instigated deadly flooding and landslides from early Tuesday to early
Wednesday, local time. During this time, rainfall was a staggering
37.2 inches within 24 hours! The resultant flooding and landslides
throughout the area claimed the lives of more than 500 people.
Early Thursday, the temperature plummeted 113 degrees below zero
at Russia's Vostok base on the lofty ice cap of East Antarctica. This
mark was about 15 degrees below average.
It's been even hotter than usual lately in much of northwestern
Africa. In Algeria, for example, Ouargla and In-Salah registered 121
degrees Wednesday while El Oued and Hassi Messaoud soared to 120. In
nearby Tunisia, a high of 121 degrees was set at El Borma. These
readings were generally 10-15 degrees above average.
Locally heavy rain hit eastern China Wednesday to Wednesday night,
local time. In southeastern Henan province, thundery downpours left
rainfall of 4.8 inches at Gushi.
