Mumbai (Bombay), India, was pounded by torrential rain that
instigated deadly flooding and landslides from early Tuesday to early
Wednesday, local time. During this time, rainfall was a staggering
37.2 inches making it the rainiest 24-hour period in the nation's
recorded history. The resultant flooding and landslides throughout the
area claimed the lives of at least 99 people.
On Wednesday, the temperature plummeted 111 degrees below zero at
Russia's Vostok base set on the lofty ice cap of East Antarctica. The
high for the day, -107, was almost 25 degrees below average.
Monday through Wednesday saw fiery heat in Tarabulus, or Tripoli,
Libya's capital. Monday's high was 112 degrees and Tuesday soared to
114. At midafternoon Wednesday, the temperature was back up to 111
degrees. For perspective, the average daily high during July is 95
degrees.
Wednesday morning, EDT, Banyan, now an extra-tropical cyclone, is
sweeping northeastward over Russia's Kuril Islands having passed over
Japan Tuesday and Tuesday night. The storm dumped about 3.75 inches
of rain on Tokyo.
