        World Weather Summary

A new tropical storm is plying the waters of the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Wednesday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Nalgae is
centered 540 miles north-northwest of Wake Island. With highest
sustained winds of 50 mph, the storm is moving northwestward at 12
mph. During the next 2-3 days, Nalgae is forecast to strengthen
somewhat while staying on a northwestward, open water heading.

Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, meanwhile, Eugene has
weakened to a tropical depression. Late Wednesday morning, EDT,
Tropical Depression Eugene holds top sustained winds of 35 mph about a
center which is about 115 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico;
it is moving northwestward at 9 mph. Eugene is forecast to dissipate
during the next 48 hours without interacting with land.

Excessive, flooding rain linked to the former Typhoon Haitang
persisted Wednesday in portions of Taiwan and nearby mainland China.
Rainfall from the storm increased to 24.0 inches at T'ainan, Taiwan,
and 20.5 inches at Fuding, China.

Tuesday and Wednesday sweltered in Lisbon, the Portuguese capital.
A high of 95 degrees was registered Tuesday, the the temperature hit at
least 95 again on Wednesday. For perspective, the average daily high
during this part of July is 79 degrees.
