        World Weather Summary
Updated: July 18, 2005 12:13 a.m.
Sunday evening, EDT, Typhoon Haitang roared ashore onto Taiwan
from the east with highest sustained winds near 140 mph. The eye of
the storm landed near Hualien. Along with the severe damaging winds,
Haitang brought excessive, flooding rainfall. T'aipei, for example,
was inundated by 8.4 inches of rain as of Monday morning. T'ainan and
P'engchia Yu were each soaked by about 7.8 inches.

Strong winds and very heavy rain from Haitang reached to Japan's
southern Ryukyu Islands. Ishigaki Shima was drenched by 9.2 inches of
rain from Saturday to late Monday, local time. Rainfall during the
same interval was 5.9 inches at Miyako Jima.

Late Monday morning, EDT, Typhoon Haitang is over northern Taiwan.
Centered about 50 miles southwest of T'aipei, Haitang has top
sustained winds of 105 mph; it is moving north-northwestward at 7 mph.
A slow northwestward movement and a weakening trend are forecast for
the cyclone during the next 36 hours. On this projected course, the
storm will cross the Taiwan Strait and land on mainland China.

Downpours pelted portions of southern Mexico Sunday to early
Monday. At Acapulco, for instance, 24-hour rainfall as of Monday
morning was about 4.5 inches. Arriaga collected about 4.2 inches of
rain during the same time.

Newly-formed Tropical Storm Eugene is gathering strength over the
eastern North Pacific Ocean off southwestern Mexico. Late Monday
morning, EDT, Eugene holds top sustained winds of 40 mph about a
center which is 285 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The
storm is moving west-northwestward at 14 mph. Eugene is forecast to
remain a tropical storm as he makes his way towards the northwest
during the next 36 hours. On this heading, the cyclone will stay far
away from the Mexican mainland, but the Revillagigedo Islands may not
be spared its heavy rain and strong winds.

Locally heavy rain hit the island of Borneo Sunday to Sunday
night, local time. In Malaysia, rainfall was 7.1 inches within 24
hours at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
