        World Weather Summary
Updated: July 17, 2005 10:03 a.m.
As of early Sunday, Typhoon Haitang remains a very powerful and
dangerous storm with sustained winds averaging around 135 mph with
gusts easily reaching Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale
of 156 mph or higher. Haitang is centered near 22 degrees north and
125 degrees east or to the east-southeast of Taiwan. The direction
of movement continues to be to the west-northwest at around 11 mph.
Where Haitang is going is straight towards Taiwan and landfall will
occur sometime on Monday morning over east-central Taiwan. Haitang
is expected to lose some of its strength by the time of landfall,
but still, the storm will remain a major typhoon. Haitang will not
be moving all that fast, leading to a long period of heavy, flooding
rains that may extend into Wednesday as Haitang drives into the
Fujian province of southeast China during the day Tuesday. In
addition to the flooding rains, Taiwan will have to endure damaging
winds to structures and vegetation along with severe coastal
flooding.

Hurricane Emily was centered at 17.7 north and 81.2 west, or
about 110 miles south of Grand Cayman. The minimum central
pressure has risen to 943 millibars (27.85 inches). Maximum
sustained winds are 150 mph with higher gusts. Movement is
west-northwest at 18 mph. Emily should stay in a mostly favorable
environment for the next 24 hours before moving over land, with
its strength fluctuating as its inner core undergoes eyewall
replacement cycles. Still, Emily will remain a dangerous
hurricane until landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula. Average
surface pressures in the area remain low, and water temperatures
remain high.

Hsu-Chou, China has received over 3.46 inches of rain over the
past 24 hours.

Many parts of Bangladesh continue to endure heavy downpours of
rain. Rangpur has already received nearly 10 inches of rain on
Friday and close to another 7 inches fell on Saturday. Nearly
5 inches of rain fell on Sylhet on Saturday as well.
