Sunday to early Monday, a storm brought soaking rain to parts of
central Chile. At Concepcion, rainfall as of Monday morning was 6.4
inches within 24 hours; this was about two-thirds of the monthly
mean.
The weather has grown increasingly hot during recent days at
Fahud, Oman. Consecutive highs of 116, 118 and 121 degrees were set
Friday through Sunday. Monday afternoon, the temperature reached at
least 121 degrees.
Heavy rain struck portions of eastern China Sunday to Monday. In
the province of Anhui, for example, rainfall was 8.7 inches within 30
hours as of early Monday evening, local time, at Anqing. Xiushui in
northwestern Jiangxi province was pelted by 6.2 inches of rain during
the same period.
Many parts of southern Japan were unusually hot on Monday. On the
island of Honshu, Owase soared to 97 degrees; this mark was about 18
degrees above average. Tokyo's 92-degree high was 13 degrees above
average. Takamatsu, Shikoku, spiked to 96 degrees.
Tropical Storm Calvin is skirting southern Mexico. At 11 AM
Monday, EDT, Calvin holds highest sustained winds of 50 mph about a
center which is 150 miles south of Acapulco, Mexico; it is drifting
northwestward at 8 mph. Calvin is forecast to move generally towards
the west-northwest during the next 2-3 days during which time some
strengthening is probable; its center should stay over open seas, but
the threat of locally heavy rain will persist along the shores of
southern and southwestern Mexico.
