World Weather Summary
Updated: June 25, 2005 7:53 a.m.
Beatriz, a weakening tropical depression, continues to weaken over
the eastern North Pacific Ocean. As of late Saturday morning, EDT,
Tropical Depression Beatriz holds highest sustained winds of 25 mph.
Centered 415 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the storm is
moving at 9 mph towards the west-northwest. Beatriz will slowly
dissipate on a heading generally towards the west during the next 2-3
days.
A stationary front draped over southern China much of this week
has resulted in torrential rainfall. The floods have already killed
over 560 people while severing railroads and damaging other
infrastructure.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms affected the United Kingdom on
Friday and early Saturday as a cold front brought an end to the heat
wave. Many locations received torrential rainfall totals of over 2
inches in just a couple of hours. In fact Lyneham, UK received 2.22
inches of rain.
Another 1.3 inches of monsoonal rain fell on Mumbai (Bombay) late
Friday and early Saturday bringing the weekly total to an astonishing
13.0 inches.
Searing heat baked much of western Pakistan Friday. At Dalbandin,
for example, a high of 122 degrees was registered; this was 15 degrees
above average. The high heat was accompanied by strong, dusty winds in
Nok Kundi. The high was 115 degrees, and sustained winds blowing above
50 mph at times whipped around enough dust and sand to cut the
visibility to one-eighth of a mile.
Southeastern China's Guangdong province has also had more than its
fair share of heavy rain this week. At Shanwei, rainfall was 13.9
inches from Tuesday morning to late Friday, local time. During this
same period, rainfalls were 11.0 inches on Shangchuan Dao, 8.1 inches
at Shenzhen and 7.2 inches in Fogang.
Seventy-two hour rainfall ended Friday morning, local time, was
8.1 inches at Tanega Shima, Japan.
