World Weather Summary
Updated: June 24, 2005 11:50 a.m.
Beatriz is a fading tropical depression over the eastern North
Pacific Ocean. As of late Friday morning, EDT, Tropical Depression
Beatriz holds highest sustained winds of 25 mph. Centered 405 miles
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the storm is moving at 9 mph
towards the west-northwest. Beatriz will slowly dissipate on a heading
generally towards the west during the next 2-3 days.
Thursday, much of western Europe as far north as southeastern
England was unusually hot. With respect to normal, some of the hottest
weather was found in France. Here, Paris rose a full 20 degrees above
average to reach 93 degrees. Strong thunderstorms in parts of the city
brought significant cooling and wind gusts to 50 mph late in the day,
however. In London, England, a high of 88 degrees was registered at
Heathrow airport whereas an average day in this part of June has a
high of 69.
Searing heat baked much of western Pakistan Friday. At Dalbandin,
for example, a high of 122 degrees was registered; this was 15 degrees
above average. The high heat was accompanied by strong, dusty winds in
Nok Kundi. The high was 115 degrees, and sustained winds blowing above
50 mph at times whipped around enough dust and sand to cut the
visibility to one-eighth of a mile.
Mumbai (Bombay) has had plenty of monsoon rain this week. From
Tuesday morning to midday Friday, local time, 11.7 inches of rain fell
on this Arabian Sea city.
Southeastern China's Guangdong province has also had more than its
fair share of heavy rain this week. At Shanwei, rainfall was 13.9
inches from Tuesday morning to late Friday, local time. During this
same period, rainfalls were 11.0 inches on Shangchuan Dao, 8.1 inches
at Shenzhen and 7.2 inches in Fogang.
Seventy-two hour rainfall ended Friday morning, local time, was
8.1 inches at Tanega Shima, Japan.
