Tropical Storm Beatriz is plying the waters of the eastern North
Pacific Ocean off of southwestern Mexico. As of early Thursday
morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Beatriz is centered 455 miles south of
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and 200 miles southeast of Isla Socorro, one
of Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands. Moving west-northwestward at 14
mph, Beatriz holds top sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm is
forecast to strengthen somewhat further during the next 12-24 hours,
then to begin a weakening trend. Beatriz will cross some of the
Revillagigedo Islands; otherwise, it will be over open seas during the
next 3-4 days.
Parts of northwestern Mexico have dealt with high heat this week.
In the state of Sonora, highs were 113, 114 and 114 degrees,
respectively, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Altar; these marks
were about 10 degrees above average.
In southern Spain, the city of Cordoba registered consecutive
highs of 102, 106 and 107 degrees Monday through Wednesday. These
marks were well above average as the mean daily high during June is 89
degrees.
Parts of southern Saskatchewan, Canada, were unusually hot on
Wednesday. The provincial capital, Regina, for example, spiked to 92
degrees versus an average high of 74. Moose Jaw, Val Marie and
Weyburn each registered a high of 94 degrees.
Scattered downpours pelted south-central Canada Wednesday night.
Coronach in southern Saskatchewan collected 4.1 inches of rain within
twelve hours. To the east and in western Ontario, rainfall during the
same period was 4.0 inches at Sioux Lookout.
Heavy monsoon rain continued to pelt parts of western India
Thursday. At Ratnagiri, rainfall from Monday morning to late Thursday,
local time, was 12.4 inches. During the same time, 11.8 inches of rain
fell on Mumbai (Bombay).
Far southeastern China was hit by excessive amounts of rain this
midweek. In Guangdong province, rainfall was 10.5 inches on Shangchuan
Dao and 8.9 inches at Shaoguan; both tallies were registered within 60
hours as of early Thursday evening, local time.
