        World Weather Summary
Updated: June 21, 2005 9:59 a.m.
Recent days have been even hotter than usual in much of northern
India where the cooling monsoon rain has yet to commence. Hissar, for
example, registered consecutive highs of 116, 115 and 116 degrees
Sunday through Tuesday. For perspective, the average daily high in
this part of June is about 105 degrees.

Along India's southern Arabian Sea shores, however, the monsoon is
in full swing as many places have had heavy rain lately. The city of
Mangalore, for instance, was inundated by 20.7 inches of rain within
less than three-and-a-half days as of late Tuesday afternoon, local
time. During the same spell, Goa picked up 12.8 inches of rain. Other
rainy spots included Kozhikode with 9.6 inches and Cochin with 8.2
inches.

Torrential, flooding rain has swamped portions of southeastern
China since late last week. One city in the province of Guangdong,
Heyuan, was soaked by 21.6 inches of rain from Saturday morning to
Tuesday evening, local time. During this same exact interval, rainfall
was 16.2 inches at Guangchang, Jiangxi province.

Japan's Syowa base on the Prince Olav Coast of East Antarctica was
ripped by strong winds Tuesday. Sustained winds rose from near 45 mph
to 70 mph. Wind-whipped snow severely cut the visibility as
temperatures hovered in the lower 20s.

Monday was unusually warm, even hot, in parts of eastern Ontario,
Canada. In Timmins, for example, the high was 91 degrees whereas the
average high for the date was about 71. At the southwestern tip of
James Bay, meantime, Moosonee soared nearly 25 degrees above average
in reaching 89.
