        World Weather Summary
Updated: June 20, 2005 7:58 a.m.
High heat continued to bring unseasonably hot temperatures to
portions of western Europe Sunday. In fact, the last several days
have been unusually hot, particularly in Portugal, Spain and France.
Tours, France peaked at 94 degrees Sunday. Further south, Bilbao,
Spain reached 106 degrees Saturday, but northerly winds from the Bay
of Biscay allowed temperatures to reach a more pleasant 78 degrees
Sunday. Madrid, Spain, however, has had no relief from the heat over
the last several days. The temperature has been 90 degrees or hotter
since June 15th. Sunday, the temperature climbed to 100 degrees, well
above their normal high temperature of 80 degrees.

Torrents of rain produced flash flooding in North Yorkshire,
England Sunday. The town of Helmsley was hit the worst as the nearby
River Rye flooded and threatened to engulf the only bridge in and out
of town. These rains also produced landslides, washed away some roads
and left nine people reported missing.

Monsoonal rains have been falling over portions of India. Along
the southwest coast, Ratnagiri has received nearly 9 inches of rain
fell since Friday. Goa has received nearly 6 inches since Friday.
Mangalore in southern India has received nearly 22 inches of rain in
the month of June from the monsoon. Monsoonal rains have finally
reached Bombay Saturday and Sunday when nearly 2 inches of rain has
fallen.

Heavy rain near Calgary in Alberta, Canada has forced a number of
residents to evacuate their homes after several days of torrential
rain. Since the 17th of June, many areas around the city have received
over 3 inches of rain on already saturated ground. In fact, the
Calgary international airport has reported nearly 9 inches of rain
this month, almost 500 percent the normal amount for June.

Heavy rains have soaked portions of eastern China this past
weekend. Shao-Wu received nearly 7 inches of rainfall from Saturday
morning through Sunday night. Since Thursday, over 10 inches of rain
has fallen.
