Torrential, flooding rain inundated Okinawa, one of Japan's Ryukyu
Islands, Tuesday through Friday, local time. At Naha, rainfall was
23.5 inches within 84 hours.
Parts of southeastern Mexico have also been swamped by excessive
amounts of rain during recent days. In Coatzacoalcos, for example,
72-hour rainfall ended early Thursday evening was 13.0 inches.
Friday, fiery heat burned lands surrounding the northwestern
Persian Gulf, including far southeastern Iraq. In southwestern Iran,
Agha Jari withered at 121 late-afternoon degrees; at the same time,
Ahwaz and Abadan each showed 120 degrees. Kuwait City, Kuwait, also
endured 120-degree heat.
Heavy monsoon rain reached the southwestern shores of India
Thursday to Friday. Cochin picked up 5.2 inches of rain while Goa
gathered in about 5.1 inches. Rainfall was about 4.5 inches in
Kozhikode.
Northern and eastern parts of India sweltered again on Friday,
however, with only spotty rain providing limited afternoon cooling.
Topping the list of hot spots were Allahabad and Agra, each of which
reached 116 degrees. Bhubaneshwar was nearly as hot with a high of 115
degrees. These marks were 15-20 degrees above average.
Lisbon, Portugal's capital, was unusually hot on Friday. At
midafternoon, the temperature was 95 degrees whereas an average day
near the middle of June would have a high of 75.
A lengthy spell of unusually hot weather in southern Quebec,
Canada, was broken this week by abnormally heavy rainfall. In
Montreal, for example, rainfall was 4.0 inches within 72 hours as of
Friday morning. For perspective, June's average rainfall is 3.3
inches. Other places were even rainier. Saint Clothilde and Charlevoix
were drenched by 4.9 and 4.2 inches of rain, respectively, during the
same time span.
