World Weather Summary
Updated: June 16, 2005 9:43 a.m.
Flooding rain swamped parts of Taiwan from late Saturday to late
Thursday, local time. In the southwest, rainfall was a staggering 35.6
inches at T'ainan; that's about three feet!
Heavy rain also doused Okinawa, one of Japan's Ryukyu Islands,
Tuesday through Thursday, local time. At Naha, rainfall was 13.7
inches within 60 hours.
Parts of Argentina have endured some very wintry weather this
midweek. In the far south, consecutive lows of 9 and 6 degrees were
registered Wednesday and Thursday at Rio Gallegos whereas an average
mid-June day would have a low of 29. Far to the north and within the
foothills of the Andes, meantime, heavy, wet snow fell on the town of
Malargue Wednesday and Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, the snow
lay 8 inches deep. Here, June has an average daily high of 54 degrees,
but Wednesday's daytime high was only 33.
Locally heavy rain pelted southeastern Paraguay Wednesday and
Wednesday night. San Juan Bautista and Capitan Meza each gathered in
about 4.1 inches of rain within 24 hours as of Thursday morning.
A large part of central Asia has sweltered this week. On
Wednesday, the high heat was centered upon southern Kazakhstan,
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Zlikha, Kazakhstan, soared to 110
degrees, or a full 20 degrees above average. Topping the list of hot
spots in Uzbekistan was Buzaubay with 111 degrees; here, Thursday
reached at least 113 degrees. Ekedzhe, Turkmenistan, was more than 15
degrees above average in peaking at 110 degrees Wednesday.
Cooling, monsoon rain has yet to reach much of India. The delay of
this seasonal weather shift has caused northeastern parts of the
nation to be much hotter than usual for middle June in recent days.
Thursday, for example, saw Bubaneshwar rise more than 20 degrees above
average in setting a high of 115 degrees.
