World Weather Summary
Updated: June 15, 2005 9:51 a.m.
Flooding rain swamped parts of Taiwan from late Saturday to late
Wednesday, local time. In the southwest, rainfall was 29.6 inches at
T'ainan. The torrential downpours spread northward Tuesday and
Wednesday; T'aichung (Taizhong) gathered in 13.3 inches of rain.
Heavy rain also doused Okinawa, one of Japan's Ryukyu Islands,
Tuesday through Wednesday, local time. At Naha, rainfall was 8.8
inches within 36 hours.
A tropical wave instigated locally very heavy rain in southeastern
Mexico Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. Rainfall was 7.6 inches,
mostly within 18 hours, at Coatzacoalcos.
Wednesday dawned unusually cold at Rio Gallegos in far southern
Argentina. The temperature fell to 9 degrees whereas an average
mid-June day would have a low of 29.
Sustained winds blowing 45-65 mph whipped Australia's Casey
research facility on the coast of East Antarctica Tuesday night
through Wednesday, local time. Wind-whipped snow severely cut the
visibility.
A delay in the onset of the summer monsoon and its rain has
allowed the springtime heat to last unusually deep into June in most
of eastern India. Monday through Wednesday, for example, saw
respective highs of 113, 111 and 111 degrees at the seaside city of
Kakinada whereas the average daily high during middle June is 96.
Farther inland and to the northeast of Kakinada, these three days saw
consecutive highs of 115, 113 and 114 degrees at Jharsuguda; these
marks were about 12 degrees above average.
The first 14 days of the month had an average temperature which
was almost 14 degrees above the climatological mean in Toronto,
Canada's largest city.
