World Weather Summary
Updated: June 13, 2005 10:21 a.m.
Flooding rain swamped parts of Taiwan from late Saturday to late
Monday, local time. In the southwest, rainfall was 16.4 inches within
48 hours at T'ainan.
Twenty-four hour rainfall ended Monday morning, local time, was
8.2 inches on Ishigaki Shima, one of Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands.
The annual monsoon and its rain have been late in reaching India's
Bay of Bengal shores this year. As a result, oppressive heat and
humidity have persisted deeper into June than usual. Monday, for
example, saw highs of 113 and 112 degrees, respectively, at Kakinada
and Machilipatnam. These marks were about 15 degrees above average.
Monday, the Libyan capital, Tarabulus (Tripoli) soared to at least
106 degrees whereas an average day near the middle of June would have
a high of 93 degrees.
Portions of middle South America have had more than their fair
share of rain lately. In Bolivia, for example, 48-hour rainfall ended
Monday morning was 7.9 inches at Reyes. Plenty of rain has fallen on
far northeastern Argentina, southernmost Brazil and parts of Uruguay,
too. Sao Luiz Gonzaga, Brazil, was soaked by 7.7 inches of rain from
Saturday morning to Monday morning. Northeastern Argentina had about
6.1 inches of rain within 24 hours as of Monday morning at Monte
Caseros.
Saturday and Sunday saw respective highs of 106 and 107 degrees
registered in Villahermosa, southeastern Mexico. These readings were
about 20 degrees above average for June.
Montreal, Quebec, Canada, withered under near-record heat over the
weekend. Saturday's 91-degree high and Sunday's top reading of 90
degrees were more than 15 degrees above average; each maximum was only
one degree shy of records which have stood for about 60 years.
