A major drought has gripped parts of the Northern Territory of
Australia. There has been only 1.5 inches of rain across some
interior sections since last June. This region of Australia is on
the verge of its driest 12 months on record. Similar drought
conditions were last seen in the early 1960s.
Thunderstorms erupted over Bangladesh Sunday and unleashed brief,
but torrential downpours. In Dhaka, roads were washed out and flights
cancelled by a sudden storm which left 1.77 inches of rain. At least
10 people were killed throughout the nation by lightning and scores
more were injured by flying debris as the storms strong winds blew
over many homes.
A major forest fire in South Africa was brought under control late
Sunday. The fire began Saturday night and spread across the Outeniqua
mountains, located near the south coast. High winds, at times nearing
40 mph pushed the blaze more than 30 miles before firefighters were
able to contain it. Nearby at the town of George, visibility was
briefly reduced under 3/4 of a mile in smoke.
