Winchester (nw) VA

In the first 2 weeks of May, nearly no rain fell in the region. A cold
front touched off thunderstorms last Saturday. There was severe weather
mainly between Woodstock VA and the eastern suburbs of Washington,
including the I-66 corridor. The Baltimore Washington NWS issued nearly
2 dozen severe thunderstorm warnings that day. I had pea sized hail and
about .37" rainfall, (I had rain guage problems that day.) I did not do
a report for that day due to lack of time.

Since the ground dried quickly, the forecast of another 1/2 inch
rainfall for Thursday was welcome. As the timeline narrowed, the storm's
arrival was delayed until Thusday night & Friday. By Thursday evening, a
widespread QPF (Precip forecast) of 1 to 2" was predicted.

The rain arrived locally about 9pm Thursday and fell moderate at times
thru the night. Heavier rain fell Friday morning, tapering off to
drizzle in the early afternoon.

My storm total was 1.92", bringing the May total to 2.39". I measured
1.55" on Friday. The previous daily rainfall record was 1.11 in 1972.

Elsewhere widespread totals of 1.5 to 4" in the northern half of VA into
MD. No real problems were recorded. However there was minor flooding,
and scattered power outages & downed trees in the Washington DC area

Cold air damming brought temperatures down into the 50's for Friday.
Some may have complained that the March like highs were record cold for
May. But in checking local daily records, record cold maxiums are in the
50s nearly daily in May. My high was 50 about 2am Friday, but the
afternoon temperature was a mere 52º. The daily record Friday was
50º in 1980.

My peak wind gust (PWG) Friday was 23mph. Most of the PWGs at official
stations were also in the 20 to 30mph range. A few stronger gusts
include:

Norfolk Airport 38mph
Washington Reagan National Apt 41mph
Baltimore Washington International 44mph

But the big story was rain totals. In the Shenandoah Valley, I found 7
AWS stations with rainfall from 12am Friday over an inch.

Many official stations set daily records for May 20th. (Rain began
falling a few hours before midnight, so the totals below are NOT storm
totals.)

Wallops Island VA, 1.57"
Salisbury MD, 3.83"
Washington Reagan National Apt, 2.63"
Baltimore Washington International, 1.97"
Washington Dulles, 1.66"
Charlottesville VA, .64"

Not records but near an inch were:
Richmond (VA) International Apt .97"
Martinsburg WV .92"

Wakefield NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning Thursday evening.
There was no local storm reports issued by the 3 VA NWS offices.
