Most of India and Pakistan withstood withering heat Tuesday. Highs
were widely above 100 degrees and many places climbed over 110
degrees. Leading the way in India was Nagpur which peaked at 116
degrees. With a 114-degree high, Allahabad was nearly as hot. In
Pakistan, Nawabshah registered 116 degrees for a second straight day
while Pad Idan soared to 115 degrees.
Temperatures across portions of the Mediterranean Sea,
particularly in Libya and Tunisia, was burned by high heat Tuesday.
The temperature reached 105 degrees at Tarabulus (Tripoli), the
national capital. The normal high for this time of the year is only 86
degrees. High temperatures rose to 108 degrees in Baninah and 109
degrees in Agedabia, both of which were about 25 degrees above their
normal high. The high heat was also felt in Tunisia. El Borma saw an
afternoon temperature of 112 degrees.
San Juan, Puerto Rico, has had more than its share of rain lately.
>From last Wednesday, May 11, through Tuesday, about 5.5 inches of rain
fell. This amount is nearly the average amount of rainfall the city
receives during the entire month of May.
Sustained winds blowing 55-65 mph lashed the Maui A oil and gas
platform off the west coast of New Zealand's North Island for more
than 24 hours through Tuesday.
The first Tropical Depression of the Eastern Pacific season
quickly became Tropical Storm Adrian Tuesday night. As of early
Wednesday, winds were sustained at 50 mph with gusts to 65. The center
of Adrian is located at 10.9 north and 93.8 west, or 320 miles
southwest of the coast of El Salvador. The movement is northeast at 8
mph. Adrian is expected to strengthen as it approaches the central
American coast, El Salvador in particular. Adrian could become a
hurricane late today or tomorrow. A landfalling tropical storm or
hurricane is rare in this part of the world. Rain bands will affect
the coasts of Guatemala and El Salvador later today. 6-10 inches of
rain is expected along the track of the storm. But, amounts could
easily reach 20 inches in the high mountains across El Salvador and
surrounding areas. Rainfall of this magnitude will cause deadly flash
flooding and mudslides.
