        World Weather Summary
Updated: May 16, 2005 10:04 a.m.
A tropical wave drifting near the southeastern Philippines has
the potential to grow into a tropical depression within the next 24
hours. Even if the wave does not become any better organized, locally
heavy rainfall is likely in Mindanao and on the smaller islands of
the central Philippines.

Recent days have brought heavy rainfall to Brazil's far northern
state of Roraima. At Caracarai, 72-hour rainfall as of Monday morning
was 5.8 inches.

Sunday and Sunday night, thundery downpours pelted middle South
America from eastern Paraguay to far northeastern Argentina. In
Paraguay, rainfall amounts within 24 hours as of Monday morning were
4.5 inches at Ciudad del Este, 3.1 inches at San Juan Bautista and
2.9 inches in Asuncion, the national capital. Iguazu, Argentina, was
soaked by 3.7 inches of rain during the same time span.

Sustained winds blowing 35-60 mph lashed Japan's Syowa base on
East Antarctica's Prince Olav Coast for more than 50 hours as of late
Monday, local time. Blowing snow often cut the visibility below one
mile.

Much of Libya, even some places in the far north that are normally
moderated by breezes from the Mediterranean Sea, has sweltered lately.
At Baninah, for example, Sunday reached 100 degrees and Monday was at
least 102 degrees. In between, an overnight low of 82 degrees was
registered. For perspective, the average daily high and mean daily low
during May are 82 and 62 degrees, respectively, here. Farther inland,
Gialo spiked to 109 degrees Sunday and the temperature was rising at a
similar pace on Monday; the average daily high during middle May is
93.

Monday, fiery heat burned India. Highs above 100 degrees were
widely set away from the shores of the Arabian Sea and the Himalayas
of the far north. Many places in the lower north and east breached
the 110-degree mark. Nagpur, with its 115-degree high, topped the
lengthy list of hot spots. Jharsuguda spiked to 114 degrees. Peaking
at 113 degrees were Bikaner, Kota, Jamshedpur, Ramgundam and Raipur.

Locally heavy rain pounded greater Jakarta, the capital of
Indonesia, Sunday to early Monday, local time. At the Soekarno-Hatta
international airport in the city's northwestern suburbs, rainfall was
about 6.7 inches within 30 hours.

Parts of southeastern China's Fujian province have been swamped
by heavy rain from showers and thunderstorms during recent days. At
Yong'an, 60-hour rainfall ended Sunday evening, local time, was about
8.8 inches.

Gusty showers blew through the city of Chihuahua in northern
Mexico late Sunday. At the international airport, wind gusts above 60
mph were clocked.
