Fairbanks, Alaska is in the midst of an unusually long spell of
warm weather. Friday was the 7th consecutive day with the high
temperature above 70. Temperatures since the 7th of May have averaged
14 degrees F above normal. The normal high during this period is 58.
Saturday will be another warm day, then it will cool to normal early
next week.
An area of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms soaked parts
of central Russia Friday and Friday night. In most areas, rainfall
was close to an inch, but locally heavier rains at Zametchino, a city
250 miles southeast of Moscow, added up to 4.04 inches, most of
which fell in a few hours time. The normal monthly rainfall for May
in this region is about 2.00 inches.
Hot weather continues to build over northern and central India.
Jamshedpur peaked at 115 degrees F Saturday with Jharsuguda and
Ramagundum not far behind at 113 degrees F. The hottest weather of
the summer typically occurs from mid-May through early June, just
ahead of the wet monsoon.
In far southeastern Greenland, Friday was unusually mild in some
areas. At Paamiut (Frederikshab), the high temperature was 68 degrees
whereas the average daily high during May is 38. Even during the
mildest days of summer when daytimes are long, the mean daily high
is only in the upper 40s here. The low Saturday morning was only 44
degrees, which is well above the normal high for the date.
Lord Howe Island, located off the east coast of Australia (350
miles southeast of Brisbane) was pounded by a strong storm Saturday.
Winds were sustained at 30 mph and rainfall was 3.18 inches and
counting.
Since Thursday, Taipei, Tawain has had 5.08 inches of rain. This
is more than half of the average monthly rainfall of 8.62 inches. This
is the start of the rainy season. Next month, Taipei averages over 12
inches of rain.
A weak tropical storm is drifting slowly west, just to the south
of the southern tip of Vietnam today. This storm will weaken the next
few days as it drifts slowly westward across the Thai/Malay peninsula.
If this systems holds together, it will have to be monitored for
potential reintensification as it drifts into the Andaman Sea early
next week. This area is often a fertile breeding ground for tropical
storms this time of the year.
